The Real Cost of Cafeteria Food
March 24, 2009
Just thinking about today’s Main Dish: News of the Day from the Baltimore Sun about teens coming up with new menu items for the school cafeteria… According to the article, teens need to follow these cost limits in the culinary contest:
Entree: No more than 58 cents
Fruit: 16 cents
Vegetable: 16 cents
Bread: 11 cents
Milk: 11 cents
Condiments: 10 cents
And then, of course, there is the expense for disposable packaging. Looking at it this way, the whole notion of serving individual lunches seems ludicrous. At home, a family of six can eat a very nice lunch for seven bucks. Why do most school systems continue to use this out-of-date and atrociously wasteful and unhealthful method for feeding America’s kids??
